Ideal for: Drum circles, sound healing, meditation, classroom percussion and first-time hand drummers

A shaman-style frame drum with a fixed goatskin head, in five sizes.

Frame drums are among the oldest drums known, played in some form across nearly every culture. This Roosebeck is built in the shaman style: a natural goatskin head stretched and fixed over a heat-bent mulberry frame about 2 inches deep, played with the included leather beater. The head is pretuned, so the drum is ready to play out of the box. The 10 and 12 inch sizes are light and easy to hold for long sessions; the 18 and 22 inch drums have a deeper, longer voice.

Choosing a Size

The larger the head, the deeper the tone and the longer it rings. The 10 and 12 inch drums are bright and quick, easy for children and travel. The 14 inch is the all-round size. The 18 and 22 inch drums give the low, sustained voice many players want for meditation and ceremony, and ask a little more of the holding hand.

Fixed Goatskin Head, Mulberry Frame

The frame is solid mulberry, heated and bent into a hoop, the same way our bodhran frames are made. The goatskin head is stretched and fixed to the frame with no tuning hardware. Fixed-head frame drums are valued for their simple, natural voice; the pitch moves a little with the weather, which is part of the character of a skin drum.

Holding and Playing

Hold the drum upright by the back of the frame with one hand and play with the leather beater in the other. Strike near the center for the deepest tone and toward the rim for a brighter, more articulate sound. Bare hands give a softer, more intimate voice.

Caring for a Natural Skin Head

A natural skin head responds to the air around it. In humid weather it loosens and the voice drops; in dry air it tightens and rises. Keep the drum away from rain, heaters and hot cars. If the head goes slack on a damp day, tune it by warmth: rub the head briskly with your palm, or hold the drum near (never against) a gentle heat source such as a lamp, turning it as you go. The skin tightens as it warms and the pitch comes back up.
