Ideal for: Players drawn to a natural, rustic drum for ceremony, meditation and personal practice

A 14 inch shaman drum with the hair left on its calfskin head.

This Roosebeck frame drum keeps the hair on its calfskin head, so no two look alike. The head is pretuned and fixed to a heat-bent mulberry frame, and a leather beater is included.

Warm and Earthy

Calfskin gives a warm, rounded voice. Strike near the center for a deep tone and toward the rim for brighter overtones.

A Head with Its Hair

Leaving the hair on means every head carries its own color and pattern. Expect natural variation from the photos; that is the point of this drum.

Holding and Playing

Hold the drum upright by the back of the frame with one hand and play with the leather beater in the other. Strike near the center for the deepest tone and toward the rim for a brighter, more articulate sound. Bare hands give a softer, more intimate voice.

Caring for a Natural Skin Head

A natural skin head responds to the air around it. In humid weather it loosens and the voice drops; in dry air it tightens and rises. Keep the drum away from rain, heaters and hot cars. If the head goes slack on a damp day, tune it by warmth: rub the head briskly with your palm, or hold the drum near (never against) a gentle heat source such as a lamp, turning it as you go. The skin tightens as it warms and the pitch comes back up.
