A calfskin frame drum held by an antler handle.

An antler handle on the back of this Roosebeck frame drum gives your holding hand something solid to grip, which makes long sessions easier. The calfskin head is pretuned and fixed to a heat-bent mulberry frame, and a leather beater is included.

Warm and Full

Calfskin gives a warm, rounded voice. The 12 inch is the lightest and brightest, the 16 inch the deepest.

Antler Handle, Calfskin Head

The antler handle sits on the back of the drum, where your holding hand goes. The head is natural calfskin, so each drum has its own markings.

Holding and Playing

Hold the drum by the antler handle with one hand and play with the leather beater in the other. Strike near the center for the deepest tone and toward the rim for a brighter sound.

Caring for a Natural Skin Head

A natural skin head responds to the air around it. In humid weather it loosens and the voice drops; in dry air it tightens and rises. Keep the drum away from rain, heaters and hot cars. If the head goes slack on a damp day, tune it by warmth: rub the head briskly with your palm, or hold the drum near (never against) a gentle heat source such as a lamp, turning it as you go. The skin tightens as it warms and the pitch comes back up.
