An 18 inch shaman frame drum with a red Circle of Life design.

A Circle of Life pattern of interlocking circles is printed in red across the goatskin head of this Roosebeck frame drum. The 18 inch size has a deep, resonant voice and is still comfortable to hold. The head is pretuned and fixed to a heat-bent mulberry frame about 2 inches deep, so the drum is ready to play out of the box, and a leather beater is included.

Deep and Resonant

The 18 inch head gives a full, low tone with a good ring. Play near the center for the deepest voice and toward the rim for brighter overtones.

A Painted Head That Ages With You

The design is silkscreened onto the natural goatskin, so the print and the skin beneath it vary a little from drum to drum. Like a favorite pair of jeans, the design softens and wears with playing; that is expected, not a flaw.

Holding and Playing

Hold the drum upright by the back of the frame with one hand and play with the leather beater in the other. Strike near the center for the deepest tone and toward the rim for a brighter, more articulate sound. Bare hands give a softer, more intimate voice.

Caring for a Natural Skin Head

A natural skin head responds to the air around it. In humid weather it loosens and the voice drops; in dry air it tightens and rises. Keep the drum away from rain, heaters and hot cars. If the head goes slack on a damp day, tune it by warmth: rub the head briskly with your palm, or hold the drum near (never against) a gentle heat source such as a lamp, turning it as you go. The skin tightens as it warms and the pitch comes back up.
