Ideal for: Ceremony, meditation and players who want a drum as beautiful on the back as on the front

A calfskin frame drum laced in a Tree of Life pattern.

The rawhide lacing across the back of this Roosebeck frame drum branches out in a Tree of Life pattern. The calfskin head is pretuned and fixed to a heat-bent mulberry frame, and a leather beater is included.

Warm and Full

Calfskin gives a warm, rounded voice. The 16 inch has the deeper, longer tone of the two sizes.

Tree of Life Lacing

The rawhide lacing on the back is laid out in a branching Tree of Life pattern. The head is natural calfskin, so each drum has its own markings.

Holding and Playing

Hold the drum by the back with one hand and play with the leather beater in the other. Strike near the center for the deepest tone and toward the rim for a brighter sound.

Caring for a Natural Skin Head

A natural skin head responds to the air around it. In humid weather it loosens and the voice drops; in dry air it tightens and rises. Keep the drum away from rain, heaters and hot cars. If the head goes slack on a damp day, tune it by warmth: rub the head briskly with your palm, or hold the drum near (never against) a gentle heat source such as a lamp, turning it as you go. The skin tightens as it warms and the pitch comes back up.
