Collection: Balalaikas

The balalaika is the defining stringed instrument of Russian folk music. That unmistakable triangular body, three strings, and bright, percussive voice carry a tradition that goes back more than three centuries. Roosebeck balalaikas are handcrafted Prima models (the most common and versatile size) in solid sheesham and walnut stave-built bodies.

Hear the Roosebeck balalaika played.

Stave-built bodies. The Deluxe Prima's triangular body is assembled from individual walnut staves in the traditional Russian method. The result is a richer, more resonant sound than single-piece or laminate builds.

Solid tonewoods. Sheesham on the Prima, walnut on the Deluxe, with careful soundboard selection for projection and clarity.

Proper Prima scale. Full Prima size is the standard solo and ensemble instrument in Russian folk music. These aren't miniatures or novelty builds.

Geared tuners. Stable tuning is essential on a three-string instrument, and we spec geared tuners on both models.

The Prima Balalaika in sheesham is the approachable entry point: a warm-toned, solid-wood instrument at the standard Prima scale, ready for folk repertoire and beginner study.

For players who want premium construction and a richer voice, the Deluxe Prima with its walnut stave body is the upgrade pick, with the same scale length and playability but a noticeably fuller sound.

The balalaika is tuned EEA (two of the three strings in unison) and played primarily with the index finger of the strumming hand. Traditional Russian technique uses a rapid downstroke-upstroke pattern that creates the instrument's signature tremolo.

Both Roosebeck balalaikas ship with an owner's guide and are ready to play on arrival.
