Most harpists need four things in their first year of ownership: a clip-on chromatic tuner, a padded gig bag sized for their model, a spare set of strings for the most-broken gauges, and a stand for storage and practice.

A second tuning wrench is worth keeping in the gig bag. Strings break, and they almost always break the day before a performance.

The harp is the instrument most affected by string condition. Old strings sound dull and lose tuning stability. Most harpists replace their full string set every two to three years, with individual replacements as breaks happen.
