The Kinnor is the harp of the Hebrew Bible, the instrument King David is said to have played. This is the full-size version at 27 inches, nearly twice the length of the Mini Kinnor, with a longer string scale that gives it a deeper, rounder voice and more sustain. Ten DuPont hard nylon strings tuned to the biblical scale sit in a solid rosewood frame with a light ash soundboard. A padded gig bag comes with it.

Deeper and Rounder Than the Mini

String length is what sets the character of a lyre, and at 27 inches this Kinnor has considerably more of it than the pocket-sized version. The result is a lower, rounder voice with longer sustain, closer to what most people picture when they imagine the instrument. The light ash soundboard is responsive and open, and the rosewood frame adds density underneath so the tone stays warm rather than thin.

Inspirational tuning: Because the Kinnor is a biblical instrument, many players use what is called inspirational tuning, finding the notes that move you rather than locking to a strict modern key.

Rosewood Frame, Light Ash Soundboard

The frame is solid rosewood, dense and warm-toned, paired with a light ash soundboard whose paler grain sets off the darker frame. The contrast is part of why this instrument reads as well on a wall or a shelf as it does in your hands.

At 27 inches long, 13 inches wide, and 2.5 inches deep, it is a full-size instrument that still carries easily, and the padded gig bag means you can take it to a study group or a service without hunting for a case.

About the form: The Kinnor's lyre-style frame dates back over 3,000 years. It is one of the oldest documented stringed instruments in human history.

Pluck and Listen

Hold the Kinnor on your lap or upright against your body and pluck the strings with your fingers. There are no levers, no frets, and no complicated technique to learn. Most players settle into a tuning that resonates with them and use the instrument for unstructured, meditative play.

Use the included tuning tool to bring the strings to pitch. Nylon strings stretch in over the first few weeks, so expect to retune often at first and much less once they settle.

Ten strings, many ways to tune: Pentatonic scales, modal tunings, and traditional Hebrew tunings all work on ten strings. There is no single correct answer, which is part of the appeal.
