3-String Prima Rosewood or Walnut Staves Deluxe Inlays Reinforced Pancer 430mm Scale

Ideal for: Serious balalaika players ready to step up from a standard model

The premium Prima, with a full stave bowl in rosewood or walnut.

The Deluxe Prima Balalaika takes the classic 27-inch Russian three-string and elevates it with a stave-built bowl, larger fretboard position markers, and a screw-secured pancer (the guard plate below the strings) for added durability. It comes in two stave woods that share the same deluxe build and differ in voice and look: solid rosewood, a single-tonewood bowl that runs warm and uniform with long sustain, or walnut, an alternating-stave bowl with a brighter, two-tone contrast.

Bright Top, Warm Body, More Sustain

The spruce soundboard delivers the bright, articulate tone the balalaika is known for, while the stave bowl adds the warmth and sustain you won't find in basic models. Three strings (one steel with ball end, two titanium with straight ends) tuned A-E-E deliver the percussive shimmer that defines the Prima voice.

The bowl wood sets the character. Solid rosewood is a single-tonewood bowl, dense and uniform, with deeper low end and longer sustain. Walnut alternates staves for a warm, focused voice with strong mids and a two-tone look.

About the woods: Rosewood is one of the most prized tonewoods in stringed-instrument making, dense and resonant, developing richer character as it plays in over the years. Walnut is a classic hardwood known for warm, focused tone that adds depth to the naturally bright, percussive balalaika voice.

Deluxe Details Throughout

Both editions are built with stave construction and a screw-secured pancer, a meaningful upgrade over standard glue-only construction that protects the soundboard from strumming wear. Larger position markers on the fretboard make navigating the upper registers easier, particularly under stage lighting.

The rosewood edition uses a single tonewood throughout for a uniform, refined bowl that matches its rosewood pancer. The walnut edition uses multiple walnut staves that create a slightly curved back and catch the light differently across the bowl, for more visual presence than a flat-back model.

What "deluxe" actually means: Larger fretboard position markers, additional handcrafted detail work, flush inlays, and the screw-reinforced pancer. Visually and structurally a step above the standard Prima.

Standard Prima Tuning, Refined Playing Feel

Tune to A, E, E above middle C. The thinnest first string lays over more frets than the second and third. Use a piano or an electronic tuner as your reference. Each tuning peg adjusts its tension with the screw on top of the peg, so you can dial in a peg that turns exactly as smoothly as you want.

To play, the left hand notes the strings while the index finger of the right hand strums high on the soundboard near the neck. The pancer sits right where your strumming hand lands, decorative and protective at once.

A note on strings: Wipe the strings down with a clean, dry cloth after each session. Most players change them every three to four months, and it is worth keeping a spare set on hand in case one breaks. Strings are not covered under warranty.
