13 Strings / 7 Courses 25-Stave Fluted Bowl Solid Rosewood Spruce Top 600 mm Scale

Ideal for: Lutenists and early music players who want a full-size 7-course instrument with refined bowl construction

A full-size 7-course lute with a 25-stave fluted bowl.

Seven courses is the classic Renaissance configuration, the size most sixteenth-century tablature was written for, and this is the full-size version of it rather than a descant or a travel instrument. The bowl is built from 25 fluted rosewood staves, more staves than standard construction, which produces a smoother curvature and a more uniform resonance. Spruce soundboard, rosewood neck and bridge, and a lacewood-accented pegbox carrying 13 rosewood pegs. The 600 mm scale is standard for the repertoire.

Warm, Articulate, Full-Size Voice

The spruce soundboard and rosewood bowl produce warm, articulate tone across 13 strings in 7 courses. Seven courses covers the core Renaissance repertoire without the added bass weight of an eight-course instrument, which some players prefer for the clarity it leaves in the middle of the texture.

Why 25 staves matter: More staves mean a smoother, more refined curvature in the bowl. The result is a more uniform resonance and a subtle upgrade in tonal complexity over standard-stave construction.

Twenty-Five Fluted Staves

The bowl is constructed from 25 fluted rosewood staves. Fluting means each stave is shaped with a concave channel along its length rather than left flat, so the finished bowl carries a rippled surface that catches light along every seam. It is more work than a plain bowl and it shows.

The neck, nut, bridge, and end pin are rosewood, and the pegbox is rosewood with lacewood detail, holding 13 rosewood tuning pegs. The bowl measures 17.5 inches long, 12.25 inches high, and 6.5 inches wide, which is full-size proportion rather than a scaled-down body.

Full-size, not a travel instrument: This is a proper full-size Renaissance lute built for serious study and performance. If you want something smaller for the road, look at the 7-course travel lute instead.

Seven Courses, Thirteen Strings

Seven courses means 13 strings: the top course is a single string, and the remaining six are paired. Standard Renaissance tuning for the 7-course lute puts centuries of tablature under your fingers, and the 600 mm scale is the length most of that music assumes.

The nut is 2.5 inches wide, with the strings spanning 2 inches at the nut and 3.5 inches at the bridge. The neck measures 2.5 inches at the nut and widens to 3 inches at the body joint.

Seven courses or eight? Eight adds a lower bass course and more repertoire from the later Renaissance. Seven is the classic configuration, lighter in the bass and, to many ears, clearer in the middle voices. Neither is the beginner option; both are full instruments.
