5 Courses / 10 Strings Lacewood with Walnut or Rosewood Spruce Top Carved Rosette 26" Scale

Ideal for: Classical guitarists exploring Baroque repertoire and serious early-music students

The 5-course Baroque guitar, in a two-tone walnut or a warmer rosewood.

The Baroque guitar bridges the Renaissance vihuela and the modern classical guitar. This one has a body of alternating lacewood staves paired with a second wood, topped with spruce and finished with a four-layer parchment-style rosette carved directly into the soundboard. It comes in two woods that share the same build and differ in voice and look: lacewood and walnut, a bright, striking two-tone with a matching two-tone neck, or lacewood and rosewood, warmer and deeper with a rosewood fingerboard.

Bright or Warm, Always Articulate

Five courses of two strings each, six nylon and four silver-wound bass, produce the articulate tone Baroque composers wrote for. The spruce soundboard with its carved parchment rosette responds dynamically to both rasgueado strumming and delicate punteado fingerwork.

The second wood sets the character. Lacewood and walnut give a brighter, balanced voice; lacewood and rosewood run warmer and deeper, the density of the rosewood adding sustain.

About the carved rosette: Unlike inlaid rosettes, this one is carved directly into the spruce soundboard in four layers, for a more authentic period look and an integrated tonal contribution.

Two-Tone Staved Body, Period-Correct Detailing

The body alternates lacewood staves with a second wood. In the walnut edition that second wood is walnut with rosewood accents, and the neck continues the two-tone theme with alternating lacewood and walnut boards and wooden tapered pegs. In the rosewood edition the staves pair lacewood with rosewood in a matte finish, and the neck is lacewood with a rosewood fingerboard and rosewood pegs.

The bridge is rosewood-based with a lacewood top in the traditional Baroque mustache shape, ornately decorated against the light spruce.

Why the two-wood construction: Lacewood, a member of the sycamore family, has a bright timbre similar to maple. Walnut adds warmth and balance; rosewood darkens the tone and adds sustain. Either pairing produces the distinctive Baroque visual aesthetic.

Tuned A D G B E for Baroque Repertoire

Suggested tuning is A, D, G, B, E. This standard Baroque guitar tuning gives you access to Sanz, Corbetta, de Visée, and the wider 5-course Baroque literature. Movable frets on the neck plus six fixed wooden frets on the spruce soundboard extend the playing range higher than the neck alone allows, characteristic of Baroque construction. The 26-inch scale is comfortable for any classical guitarist transitioning to period instruments.

For classical guitarists: The right-hand position is the same as a modern classical guitar. The main adjustment is to the doubled courses and to the wooden tuning pegs, which require a different technique than modern geared tuners.
