Renaissance & Baroque Guitar

Roosebeck Baroque Guitar 5-Course, Lacewood & Walnut

Roosebeck Baroque Guitar 5-Course, Lacewood & Walnut

5 Courses / 10 Strings Lacewood & Walnut Spruce Top Two-Tone Neck 26" Scale

Ideal for: Classical guitarists exploring Baroque repertoire and serious early-music students

The 5-course Baroque guitar with a striking two-tone aesthetic.

The Baroque guitar bridges the Renaissance vihuela and the modern classical guitar. This lacewood version pairs alternating lacewood and walnut staves on the body with rosewood accents, producing a striking two-tone aesthetic that catches the eye. The neck alternates solid lacewood and walnut boards for the same visual effect. Topped with spruce and finished with a four-layer parchment-style rosette carved directly into the soundboard, this is an instrument that looks and sounds period-correct.

Bright, Articulate Baroque Voice

Five courses of two strings each, three nylon, two with silver-wound bass, produce the bright, articulate tone Baroque composers wrote for. The spruce soundboard with its carved parchment rosette responds dynamically to both rasgueado strumming and delicate punteado fingerwork.

About the carved rosette: Unlike inlaid rosettes, this one is carved directly into the spruce soundboard in four layers. The result is a more authentic period look and an integrated tonal contribution.

Lacewood & Walnut, Two-Tone Construction

The body alternates staves of lacewood and walnut with rosewood accents. The neck continues the two-tone theme with alternating solid boards of each wood. The peg-style tuners are wooden tapered, period-correct rather than modern geared.

The bridge is rosewood-based with a lacewood top in the traditional Baroque mustache shape, ornately decorated against the light spruce.

Why the two-wood construction: Lacewood is a member of the sycamore family with a brighter timbre similar to maple. Walnut adds warmth. Together they produce a balanced voice while creating the distinctive Baroque visual aesthetic.

Tuned A D G B E for Baroque Repertoire

Suggested tuning is A, D, G, B, E (range A2–E5). This is the standard Baroque guitar tuning that gives you access to Sanz, Corbetta, de Visée, and the wider 5-course Baroque literature. There are 15 frets total, 9 movable on the neck, 6 fixed wooden frets on the spruce soundboard.

For classical guitarists: The right-hand position is the same as a modern classical guitar. The main adjustment is to the doubled courses and to the wooden tuning pegs, which require a different technique than modern geared tuners.
