Medieval & Renaissance Instruments
Medieval and Renaissance instruments are the lutes, lyres, bowed strings, reed pipes and drums that Europe played from the Middle Ages to about 1600, before the violin family and the modern orchestra took over. This collection gathers every Roosebeck early music instrument in one place: Renaissance lutes from 6 to 8 courses, the vihuela and Renaissance and Baroque guitars, lyre harps, the rebec and medieval fiddle, bowed psalteries, the cromorne and bombard, and the tabor drum.
Every one is built to be played, not hung on a wall. New to early music? A lyre harp is the gentlest start. Guitarists settle quickly on the lute-guitar, violinists on the medieval fiddle, and recorder players on the cromorne. The guide below the instruments walks through the choice, and if you would like a second opinion, contact us and we will help you find the right fit.
